Top 10: Cars from the BMC and Leyland day
An impressive and rather fitting turnout of 30 Rover 800s converged on the British Motor Museum at Gaydon to celebrate the model’s 30th anniversary. But it was just part of a day packed with BMC, BL and Austin-Rover eye candy. If you’re not a fan of the British car industry’s darkest hours, then look away now. For here are out top 10 classics from the show…
Rover 416GTi
Another car that seems to be starting to break through in classic circles, though the surge of interest isn’t quite in line with that of the 800, is Rover’s R8 200/400 range. A defining moment for Rover, the 1989-on R8 was the best car to come from the Rover-Honda alliance, and the model that really pitched the British brand upmarket. Indeed, if it weren’t for BMW taking over Rover Group in 1994, the R8 could have been the first of many. Alas, it wasn’t to be, but good R8s have a growing following. This J-plate 416GTi auto – the range-topper of its day – was lovely. 40k on the clock, garaged from new and never resprayed.
