Buying Guide

Good

• 101 bhp GTi 16v only weighed 750kg so was fast and furious. Most had 67bhp 1.3. Odd 1,590cc 91 bhp GLX four-wheel-drive saloon lasted from March 1990 to January 1993.

Bad

• Cylinder heads of 8-valve 1.3s and 1.6s can crack.

Watch

• Cracked cylinder head on 8-valve 1.3.
• GTi 16v likely to have been thrashed - expect heavy tyre wear but look out especially for uneven wear.
• Country-bought GLX four-wheel-drive saloons may be damaged underneath.
