Mitsubishi 3000GT (1992 – 2000) Review

The Mitsubishi 3000GT enjoyed something of a confused identity globally, being known as the GTO in Japan and the Dodge Stealth in the USA. It was an ambitious arrival on the market, chiming perfectly with the times - as Japan showed the world it could build the most desirable cars in market sectors once the preserve of the Europeans. It was built in collaboration with Chrysler in the USA. The 3000GT majored on technology such as four-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, active aerodynamics, electronically controlled suspension and twin turbos. 

The 3000GT was based upon the Mitsubishi HSX concept cars first revealed at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show - and went into production almost unmodified. The car was heavy and compared with rivals such as the Nissan 300ZX and Mazda RX7, it was also rather unweildy - but despite this, there was no denying the straight line performance of the twin-turbo model, with a maximum speed of 150mph. Facelifted twice during its short life, but the concept remained pretty much unchanged. Never a common car in the UK, the 3000GT nevertheless has picked up a bit of a following in the UK.
