Buying Guide
Good
GTti is good fun.
Bad
Light build now that the cars are getting old.
Two-speed auto struggles.
Plasticky interior and not great to drive.
Ride and handling of all but GTti not quite up to the mark. Most diesels kicked off their lives with driving schools.
Watch
GTti very likely to have been thrashed.
All models likely to be showing their age by now, could have some rust which will weaken an already light structure.
GTti needs expert servicing - can't be done by the bloke with the lock-up round the corner.
Only buy GTti from enthusiastic owners who have changed the oil every 3,000 miles.
Timing belts need replacing every 3 years.
Watch out for uneven tyre wear on all models and excessive tyre scrub on GTti.
