Buying Guide

Good

  • Lovely 'up and down' classic Alfa gearchange.
  • Evergreen Alfa twin-cam motors.
  • Early 1570cc and 1779cc boat tail cars had the looks. 1990 facelift brought with it a decent hardtop. 14' long by 5' 4" wide and weighing 1110kg in 1990.

Bad

  • Scuttle shake.
  • Progressively ruined over the years by ugly facelifts, but 1990 facelift was an improvement.
  • 'B' pillar can dig you in the back when you try to get in. Ruined by fuel injection and catalytic converter.
  • LHD only with 'approved' RHD Seaking conversion in later cars.
  • Alfa Romeo had joint highest average cost in warranty claims for cars up to 10 years old in 2002 Warranty Direct index www.performanceindex.co.uk

Watch

  • Early cars rusted from new. Later cars can still rust.
  • Tears in hood and trim. Soggy carpets. Rusty 'cornflakes under the carpet' flaking rust. Rust around the fuel tank in the boot which can rot through the sandwich construction and leave you with a boot full of petrol slopping around the boot mounted battery.
  • Duff catalytic converters on later cars.
  • Broken window-winder cables.
  • Dripping heater matrix. Electrics.
  • Noisy timing chain. 3000-mile oil changes essential
