Carlo Abarth started building specials in 1950, but it was the arrival of his uprated version of the 750 that really put his company on the map. The Abarth-Fiat 750 Zagato GT was launched at the 1956 Geneva Motor Show. It was available in coupé and roadster forms, with both based on Fiat 500 running gear, but powered by Abarth's highly-tuned 747cc, which delivered an impressive 44bhp.

Standard cars were good for almost 100mph, but later versions received a twin-cam cylinder head, which boosted that to 120mph. The car's main claim to fam, though, was a class win in the 1957 Mille Miglia - and today that makes it a highly desirable (and relatively) inexpensive entry into the popular retrospective event.

Rare and hugely desirable now, and coveted by Zagato collectors.
