Austin A99 and A110 Westminster (1959 – 1968) Review

Austin A99 and A110 Westminster (1959 – 1968) At A Glance

4/5

+Stylish Italianate styling, roomy and smooth engines

-Indirect steering, wallowy handling

Applying the Pininfarina styling of the A55 and A60 Cambridge to the upscaled Westminster worked surprisingly well – in fact, it really suited the Westminster’s more imposing look. The previous pre-Farina Westminster had been a worthy car and the new A99 took the best bits from that model and improved upon them.

The C-series engine was enlarged to 3-litres and fitted with twin SU carburettors, the three-speed gearbox was given a stronger synchromesh and the front brakes were upgraded to servo-assisted discs, a first for an Austin saloon. In 1961, the Westminster was given a longer wheelbase to increase passenger room and give the car a more an impressive road presence. The following year, Austin added power steering and air-conditioning options. Later, in 1964, the A110 Westminster Mk II appeared with a four-speed gearbox, the finishing touch for a surprisingly impressive machine.
