Can I put a private plate on an imported car?

I have a 1991 Mazda Eunos imported into the UK years ago registered that's on a J plate. This does not match the year of registration. Am I allowed to put a private plate on it?

There is no problem with putting a private registration on a car providing the age identifier (in this case J-reg or earlier) doesn't make the car appear newer than it is. J-plates were issued from 1991-1992, so could actually be correct for your car.
