Overall reliability

Remarkably reliable, economical and versatile load carrier and long distance cruiser.

This is a further update on my previous Owner Review of our 2005 Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0hdi.

The car has now covered 152,000 miles since we bought it (owned from new). In addition to routine maintenance and service items, the car has needed: two engine thermostats, an ABS sensor, a pair of rear brake cylinders, three wheel bearings, an air-conditioning repair (blown fuse somewhere inaccessible requiring removal of front bumper etc.) and finally patching up of the sills due to rust eating away at them from the inside. The last point is a warning to owners to keep to their vehicle's paint and bodywork dealer inspection regime. I did not, otherwise the repair would still have been covered by the 12 year corrosion warranty.

The car is still on its original clutch and turbo. I put the former down to trying to match the engine revs for the gear I'm about to change into, together with not running the engine at too low revs. The latter can probably be explained by religiously idling the engine before switching off. I've also used either Millers diesel additives or, more recently (since about 90,000 miles) Archoil AR6200 or AR6300 additives to try to keep the whole fuel and ignition system as clean as possible. I've not had any EGR issues either (assuming it has one). Not having a DMF or DPF has also helped.

Fuel economy has averaged 49mpg over the life of the vehicle - reasonably close to the book combined figure of 51.4. The car uses no oil between services. The aircon system now seems to have developed a leak and is probably not now worth repairing. Therefore, the car has now been relegated to be the local runabout, or longer journeys when the weather is suitably cool.

It's proven to be a remarkable vehicle both in terms of reliability and versatility. It has helped children to move house on many occasions as well as other load shifting duties. Yet it's still been an excellent longer distance cruiser as well local runabout. It's proving very hard to find a suitable replacement that's going to be as economical, reliable and versatile.
