Wheeler Dealers celebrate Drive It Day in style

More than 100 classics turned up at Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer's car showroom to celebrate Drive It Day on Sunday, 26 April.

The cars ranged from a 1935 Austin 7 van to a 1990 Ford Escort RS Turbo, with Mike and Edd China being reunited with the Ford Fiesta XR2, Thunderbird and Jaguar XJ 4.2C that had all appeared in previous series. 

Mike said, 'Edd and I were amazed by the turnout. We had fans travelling from as far as Essex and Swindon to join us. It was great to meet the owners of some stunning cars, with a fair number of the classics on display owned by younger enthusiasts. Days like Drive It Day are a great reminder of what owning a classic and enjoying motoring are all about.'

Among those taking part were father and son Peter and Mark Stewart. Peter was driving his 1947 Hillman Minx while Mark was in his 1935 Austin 7 van, and they have participated in Drive It Day every year although they take their cars to shows and events most weekends.

Ray Fry from Urmston, Manchester, had used the day as an excuse to drive his 1968 Bond Equipe 1300. 'When I saw that Mike and Edd were hosting an event for Drive It Day, I thought it would be a great opportunity to drive the Equipe over Derbyshire’s Snake Pass to Sheffield to meet them. It was a brilliant drive and a great event.'

Club members were out in force, especially from the Ford Escort clubs such as the Derbyshire RS Owners Club and Rally Sport Escorts with a great line-up of XR3is, RS200s, Mexicos and RS Turbos. Ever the ‘Wheeler Dealer’ Mike was overheard asking more than one of the owners if they’d be willing to sell their car but no one was willing to part with their classic.
