Princess Diana’s Audi Cabriolet heads to auction… again
A 1994 Audio Cabriolet that used to belong to Princess Diana is for sale again. The Princess of Wales was regularly photographed with the 1994 example, which is going under the hammer in March. The car has been offered for sale three times in the past four years, each time failing to sell.
Finished in green, the car was given to Diana by London Audi dealer Dovercourt. It was a controversial decision at the time and the People’s Princess was criticised for not driving a British model.
Diana returned the car to Dovercout four months later, having clocked up about 4000 miles. The car was then bought by political commentator, broadcaster and author Ian Campbell Dale.
After two years of ownership the car changed hands again, its next owner, a neighbour to Kensington Palace, owned it for the next 17 years. In 2013 the car was again sold and has been in a couple of private collections since.
With 22,000 miles now on the clock. the car has been well looked after. It is supplied with a good history file including the relevant manuals and handbooks.
It has appeared at auction several times over past few years, but has failed to find a new home. In 2017, it was expected to fetch up to £80k but didn’t sell. It was then offered again with Historics at Brooklands for an estimated £60k. Experts suggest the car could make £40k this time out.
Princess Diana’s Audi Convertible will go under the hammer over the weekend of 28-29 of March. It is being sold with Classic Car Auctions, which prides itself on offering ‘everyman’ classics.
