Modern classics in demand as Nineties Escort Cosworth sells for £49.5k

A 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth sold for £49,500 at auction. The price shows that demand for modern classics is strong and was high enough to make the Ford top lot at the inaugural Bonhams MPH on Thursday, 26 September, at Bicester Heritage.

With 38k on the clock, the rally-inspired Escort RS Cosworth has been in storage for the past decade. Apart from a twin-headlight conversion, the car is very original with the factory paint said to be in good condition. The car also has its original alloy wheels and Recaro black cloth seats. Recent recommissioning work included fitting a new cambelt, while the car came with its original books and a full history file.

Also making strong money at the sale was a 2016 Audi A4 RS6 TFSI V8 Quattro which achieved £38,250 and a 2006 Renault Clio V6 255 Sport, which found a new owner for the sum of £37,125.  The Clio boasted low-mileage (27k) as well as an Evo induction kit at KTR full exhaust system.

Rob Hubbard, Head of Bonhams MPH, said, 'Today’s sale proves that there is an increasing appetite for ‘youngtimers’ in the market. Drivers who remember such ‘poster’ cars from their childhood are now coming of age and have the means to buy their youthful ‘dream cars’. They also offer more driver engagement and character, compared with brand new cars, but are more reliable than older classic cars.'

The debut auction for the new division of Bonhams Motor Cars, launched this summer to service the modern and affordable classics market, made an impressive impact, with a total sale rate of 82 per cent and an enthusiastic reception from a strong audience of private buyers and the motor trade who attended the drive-through sale in the classic motoring hub’s Hanger 113.

Bonhams MPH will be staging four drive-through sales per year. Consignments for the second sale on 26 November are being invited now, with the next valuation day taking place on 25 October, when potential sellers can show and discuss their cars with the MPH team.
