Racing Jaguar D-type set to fetch £4.7m
A racing 1955 Jaguar D-type is expected to sell for between £4m to £4.7m at auction in October. Chassis XKD510 is the only genuine D-type in Australia and will be auctioned by Mossgreen on 14 October.
Owned in Europe by former Le Mans 24 Hour winner Duncan Hamilton, chassis XKD510 enjoyed successes in the UK and French West Africa before going to Singapore, and eventually Australia in the late 1960s.
Noted Jaguar collector Ian Cummins owned it for a time before Australian motor racing legend Bib Stillwell bought the car at auction for a then World record price.
Stillwell took it to the USA, where he successfully campaigned it across America on the historic racing scene. Recently, the car has been on display at the Donington Museum in the UK, before returning to Australia.
Paul Sumner, Mossgreen CEO, said, ‘It’s the most valuable car to ever go to public auction in Australia, and no doubt will set new records on auction night at Motorclassica.’
Mossgreen’s Motorclassica Auction will see 31 classics go under the hammer at Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building. For more information, visit mossgreenmotoring.com.au.
