Record price set for Peugeot 205 GTI

A low-mileage Peugeot 205GTi sold for £38,480 at the weekend – a new world record price for the model. The car, an immaculate 1.9-litre with just 5726 miles on the clock went under the hammer at the Silverstone Classic.

It beat the previous record, which was set in 2016 with £31,625 paid for a model with 7986 miles on the clock. Both examples were sold by Silverstone Auctions.

The model sold at the weekend was a Phase 1.5 UK model has the XU9JA (non-cat) 128bhp engine and supplied in Alpine White paintwork with Red ‘Quattro’ velour and Grey Leather seating. It also has lightweight Speedline alloy wheels and no sunroof.

The car was first registered to the Peugeot Talbot Motor Company and offered as a prize in association with ‘Grattan’, the catalogue clothing retailer. The car was won by a lady from Ipswich, who was unable to drive. The woman’s husband collected the car on her behalf and kept it garaged and maintained before selling it in 2012.
