Cheap Rolls Royce Silver Cloud DHC in Historics Mammoth 20th August Auction
There are no less than four Blatchley bodied Rolls Royces and Bentleys in Historics 20th August auction at Brooklands and the DHC represents a rare opportunity.
'Cheap' is relative, of course. But the estimate of £110,000 to £125,000 for this stunning Wildae Restorations recreation of an HJ Mulliner DHC on a 1959 Silver Cloud 1 six cylinder is around a quarter of that on Sir Felix Dennis' identical looking Silver Cloud II DHC V8 offered earlier this year. Critics say that the 4,887cc straight six engine is more economical and easier to maintain than the later 6,230cc V8 and still gives the car a top speed of 103mph.
But if you prefer a little more power and some steel over your head, at an estimate of £22,000 to £28,000, this V8 engined 1961 Silver Cloud II saloon represents even better value. The 6,230cc V8 raised the top speed to 114mph and by 1961 the Cloud II had gained numerous refinements to improve the driving experience. This car is properly maintained, nicely detailed, MoTd and ready to drive.
A different bonnet and radiator transormed the Silver Cloud II into a Bentley S2 and this fine, comprehensively restored 1961 is estimated a little higher than the Rolls Royce at £25,000 to £30,000. A second restoration in July 2015 saw the wings, wheelarches and sills stripped back to bare metal, refurbished and the box sections Waxoyed. A manifold and twin carburettor rebuild completed the work.
Finally, a restoration project 1956 Bentley S1 six cylinder offered at no reserve. The car is complete and described as "structurally sound with the only rust problems located to the offiside front wing." The brakes need overhauling, the steering box needs rebuilding or replacing and the tyres are wrong. However, the engine starts and runs well so, for someone with the right facilities, it could be a sensible investment.
Historics consignment list for 20th August is already packed with everything from a penny farthing bicycle to a modern Rolls Royce Phantom, encompassing Ferraris, British sports cars, quaint 1950s cars and vans, American cars: truly something for everyone.
