Janis Joplin’s Porsche sells for £1.2m
Published 21 December 2015
A 1964 Porsche 356 owned by Janis Joplin sold for £1.2m at RM Sotheby’s auction in New York – a new world record for any Porsche 356 sold at auction.
The singer bought the car from a used car dealer in 1968. Joplin commissioned friend and roadie Dave Richards to customize it.
The result was a psychedelic mural called ‘History of the Universe’ – which made the cabriolet one of the first ‘art cars’.
Other early highlights of RM Sotheby’s ‘Driven by Disruption’ sale included a 1972 Lamborghini Miura P400 SV by Bertone, which sold for £1.63m before a packed house.
