Porsches beat Ferraris at Silverstone sale

Porsches ruled the roost at Silverstone Auctions’ May Sale, with a 2010 911 GT2 RS selling for £281,250, and a highly desirable 911 restoration project fetching £146,250.

The future classic GT2 RS was one of only 16 UK supplied right-hand drive cars. It outstripped its lower estimate by more than £30,000.

The highly original 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupe exceeded its lower estimate of £95,000 by almost 50 percent. A one-owner, 55,000-mile right-hand drive UK car, it certainly proved a popular restoration project.

Another Porsche, a 1989 911 Speedster with only 8,000 miles on its clock also made good money, selling for £144,000, £24,000 more than its lowest estimate.

Ferraris were well represented at the 23 May sale too, with a 2009 F430 achieving the day’s second highest price of £247,500. The modern classic had covered just 85km and unusually was finished in grey with a red leather interior.

Testarossas continued their upward price trend with a low-mileage 1989 model selling for £130,500 and the well-known yellow single ‘flying mirror’ car going for just over £95,000.

It wasn’t all about supercars though, a one-owner, 3,000-mile Mk2 Escort sold for just under £16,000, and a beautifully restored 1967 Mini Cooper exceeded £30,000.

Perhaps the bargain of the day was a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 280SL R107 that sold for just £8,775. That’s just over half the amount that has been spent on the car over the past decade. Since 2005 it had been treated to a £10,000 respray, £2200 worth of cylinder head work, and a new hood costing £1,450
