Triumph TR5 makes £28K at Barons
A 1967 Triumph TR5 sold for an impressive and above-estimate £28,000 at Barons auction's 17 September sale. It was the top seller in an auction that could have bagged you a Ferrari 308GT4 for a little more than £15,000, and a BMW 840Ci for a very reasonable £3036.
The sale featured a really diverse range of cars spanning eight decades, appealing to all tastes and budgets, resulting in a busy saleroom and lots of telephone and internet bids. One interesting lot was described as ‘one man’s interpretation of the ultimate MGB GT’.
The immaculate 1976 example featured a beautiful bespoke interior, complete with Bulgari dash clock, engine-turned dash and Moto-Lita steering wheel. This head-turner definitely caught buyers’ imaginations, selling for just under £12,900 after spirited bidding.
Other high lots were the 1996 Bentley Continental R sold for £25,772 and an LPG-converted 1967 Jaguar E-type S1 2+2, made £21,500. Although the gold-leaf covered 'ex Liberace' 1931 Cadillac Fleetwood Drop Head Coupe narrowly failed to find a buyer in this sale, it is already confirmed – at a revised guide price of £50,000-£65,000 – for Barons’ 28 October sale at Sandown Park.
Other early lots confirmed for October include a very fine 1970 Lancia Fulvia Sport Series 1.5 (£19,000-£21,000) and an exceptionally rare and desirable 1924 Fiat 501, which is still driven by its 90-year owner – who has owned the car for over half a century (estimate TBC).
