Preview: Bonhams classic car auction, Beaulieu, 8 September
Bonhams' auction, held in conjunction with this weekend's world-famous Autojumble, is led by a pre-war Sunbeam Super Sports and the 212-strong Baden collection. It's an established sale in the Bonhams calendar, and one continues to grow in popularity, with a sale total of £2.6m in 2012.
The sale at the National Motor Museum features two Sunbeams – the 1926 3-litre twin-cam Super Sports (estimate £130,000-160,000) and a 1912 Coupe de l’Auto replica (£90,000-120,000). The Super Sports has enjoyed something of an interesting life - it was was exported when new to Argentina, and had a unique four-seater touring body fitted. Upgrades included upgrading the brakes with a vacuum servo in 1978 and rebuilding the engine with a new cylinder block in 1993, and new Arias forged pistons for more performance.
It's a perfectly judged star lot for the Beaulieu sale. The Baden Collection of 21 cars, is also bang on target - all cars in it will be offered at no reserve, and that includes the 1916 Rauch & Lang Model BX6 Electric Brougham estimated at £30,000 to £35,000, a 1934 Alvis SB Firefly Tourer offered for £25,000 to £30,000, and a 1913 De Dion Bouton Type DX Touring that is expected to realise between £18,000 and £22,000.
Also, the Cottesmore Collection features a 1937 Alvis 4.3 Drophead Coupe expected to realise between £60,000 and £80,000, a 1924 Aster 18/50 Coupe estimated at £18,000 to £24,000, and a 1939 Lagonda LG6 Drophead Coupe in at £80,000 to £120,000. Other motor car highlights include a 1953 Alfa Romeo 1900 Sprint Series 1 that is estimated to realise between £60,000 and £80,000.
