RM to sell NART Ferrari for charity
RM Auctions is offering this stunning Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder at its Monterey, California, sale, on 16-17 August during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance week. It's a bit of a coup for the Canadian, as it's not only a rare and desirable US model, but also that the proceeds of its sale are going to be donated to charity.
The 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder is one of 10 built, and is especially exciting as it's a low-mileage, single-owner example, with full documentation. With the owner’s commitment to seeing the proceeds of the sale donated to charitable causes, the is bound to be one of the week long auction festival's true star motors.
These NART Spyders were conceived by Ferrari’s North American distributor and Le Mans winner, Luigi Chinetti, who anticipated US demand for Ferrari’s four-cam coupe as a convertible. He convinced Ferrari to allow him to build the cars, then commissioned Scaglietti to build them - and the end result was a legend.
The car on offer, chassis number 10709, was acquired new by Eddie Smith Sr, who picked the car up with Chinetti from the factory in Maranello - and since then, it's remained in the family. Eddie Smith Junior is selling the car, and wanted to make the difficult decision easier by offering the proceeds to charity. 'We wanted to do something that would have brought a smile to my dad’s face,' He said.
Smith Sr was a lifelong philanthropist and car fanatic - and this is a fitting way to pass it on. Rob Myers, Chairman and Founder, RM Auctions, reckons, 'For RM, this is a double honor. To be able to offer a car this rare, and to be entrusted with offering such a tremendous car in a way that will be of immeasurable benefit to good causes and of special sentimental value to the family, is an amazing thing.'
There's no pre-sale estimate, but expect a seven-figure sum when the hammer drops.
