Report: Anglia classic car auction, King's Lynn, 22 June

Anglia Car Auctions’ Classic 22 June car auction was topped by a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL Pagoda that sold for £81,900, despite not having seen daylight in over 30 years. It was one of 106 cars offered, for a total of £791,000 and a 70% sale rate.

The Pagoda set the tone for the day as one of the earlier lots with multiple phone bids from around the world and heavy interest in the room. The hammer eventually fell at £78,000 plus premium on the garage find. With just two owners from new, it moved for the first time when collected by ACA. The bumpers were removed when the car was placed in storage and covered in wax, leaving them in excellent condition. Despite an inch of dust covering the car, it was soon up and running as the engine proved mechanically sound.

Other notable results included the 1956 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I, which sold at £40,950, the 1971 Porsche 911 2.2T fetching £32,025 (double its pre-sale estimate), and the 1969 Jaguar E-type roadster making £42,000. At the other end of the scale, a pair of TVRs at the sale made great bargains, with a Series 2 Tasmin, making a sniff more than £1500, and a 1988 2.8S roadster, which sold for a very reasonable £2940.
