RM's multi-million dollar Don Davis sale
RM Auctions scored another record-breaking collection sale, racking up $21.2m for 64 cars sold at the estate of Don Davis in Fort Worth, Texas. Both a Ferrari 330GTS and a Toyota 2000GT broke auction records for two cars that are currently superheating in the market.
Bidderd from 14 countries as far disparate as Brazil, Australia, and Kuwait competed strongly for the sale's star lots. Top sale honors went to a matching-numbers 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS.The example on offer attracted tremendous interest, selling for an extraordinary $1,936,000, a new world record for a Ferrari 330 GTS sold at auction - and responsible for re-writing the guide book prices on these cars.
Taking the number two spot was another Ferrari, the 1973 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider, which went for $1,650,000. We'd predicted this one would do well, reckoning the $1.2-1.4m estimate was 'a bit conservative'. How right that proved to be. It was the same for the 1967 Toyota 2000GT, we reckoned would have no problem reaching its $650,000-850,000 estimte, but even so, the final price of $1,155,000, was a bit of a shock, no doubt jacked up by a bidding war on the day. Will this see a further push in the values of these fine cars? We'll keep a watching brief. The rest of the million sellers are listed below.
Other cars that did well on the day were the 1988 Porsche 959 ‘Komfort’, which sold for $770,000; the 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Mulliner Park Ward Drophead Coupe for $577,500; and a gorgeous 1965 Lamborghini 350 GT Coupe for $550,000 - perhaps these ugly ducklings are about to turn into a very fine swan.
