An under-rated high performance modern motoring icon conveniently ignored by the motoring press

Not even mentioned now by VW as it was extremely expensive to build but set high standards of production-line build by Karmann the German coachbuilding company and its quality shows. It is an immensely strong and robust sports car with a slightly harsh ride quaility especially on todays poorly maintained highways. However, the car does have exceptional performance as a sports car.

Several variants available but I consider the chain driven twin cam VR6 2.9 litre which I own is overall the best option, even better in "Storm" trim with leather seats, etc. However, my cloth Recaro look-alike seats are wearing well after 18 years as is everything else with only a radiator replaced in over 7 years of ownership. Despite what is often stated VW mechanical and electrical part-bins can still supply most items as they are generally VW Golf Mk. 2, Mk. 3 or Passat parts.

Bodywork is also very good with no rusting on original panels all of which appear to be galvanised and the quality of the Bramble metallic paint also appears good with no real sign of fading. Tyres and other items seem to last well with no adverse wear characteristics. Overall a great fun car!
