Reliable, Cheap, Trouble free motoring in something way cooler than modern stuff

A 23 year old car with 165,000 miles on it really shouldn't be this fast, reliable, cheap and trouble free should it? Well, it is German for a start. Secondly its a Volkswagen and after owning a whole host of Audi A4's and a Coupe I was ready for something a little different. I drive a van on weekdays and only needed a car for the odd trip here and there and after searching for a decent Ford XR and various other 80's and early 90's hatchbacks and coupe's I overlooked one thinking it 'too expensive to run'
After owning a Scirocco for a while in 2005 I knew how well built the VW's are and after checking insurance etc. I tracked down my 2 owner high mileage, but well maintained VR6 for a bargain £1400. Its definitely the best 1400 quid I have ever spent because for 2 years the car has done 10,000 trouble free miles, has returned 30-35MPG on sensible runs, costs 150 to insure, started first time every time and after 2 MOT's which have only thrown up 2 worn brake lines I am only now having to spend money on it..... A pair of new tyres on the front and new discs and pads on the front. Its been an absolute pleasure to own, drive and pass chav's in their Corsa's in.
