Brilliant ability and value

Had this nearly 5 years now, last of the Mark 1s. Still looks sharp in 3 door form.
For the money it represents great value - at the time about 3-4k cheaper than Golf equivalent. Other than DMF failure at 28k it has been totally reliable to its current 65k mileage. 49MPG, servicing through an independent, cheap insurance and tyres at £50 each. Loads of room to load it up and comfortable for long distances. Feels quality throughout - no squeaks or rattles from inside. Only quality downside is the tinny door closing. Added benefit is I can leave this car overnight somewhere and it will be untouched in the morning - no herberts have taken an interest in it.
Saving the best to last - driving. Fantastic handling and great ride. It almost feels like it has rear wheel drive such is the way the back end tracks round on corners. Slightly heavier front end due to the diesel lump but you can hustle this to your heart's content. Diesel engine not as smooth as the current breed but then it's not burdened with OTT technology like DPFs etc. Plenty of grunt - puts out a bit of smoke though (as they all do) when flooring it.
Have been thinking of getting a new car but I'm struggling to work out what I could get which can do everything this one does.
Buy a Golf if you want slightly more upmarket interior, you're a badge snob, want reliability issues or you don't care how a car drives.
A true people's car, if ever there was.
