Ford Focus (1998 - 2004)
1.8 Zetec estate
Sublime
Superb car, beautifully designed with attention to detail the MK2 didn't have e.g. armrests are padded while the MK2's are hard plastic. Rear seat folds flat with minimal rear arch intrusion while the MK2 doesn't. Zaney dashboard design is ergonomically superb with centre controls angled towards the driver.
Great fun to drive, although being the Zetec the ride quality was on the firm side. Superb handling without any noticeable understeer. Comfortable on long journeys with great driving position, good steering precision and delightful gearchange, plenty of room for driver's left foot too.
Bought with 98,500 miles and sold with 125,000, reliabilty wise one of the most reliable cars I've owned - only let down by the heater matrix failing.
This followed a 1.8 TD estate which was amazingly reliable from 138,500 miles to 183,000. Both my cars had few previous owners, with full service history. Well worth seeking out a good one. Just remember to look out for rust; particularly rear of sills, rear wheel arches, tailgate around numberplate surround, bottom of rear window and front doors at the bottom of window near the door mirror
