Alfa Romeo Spider (1966 - 1993)
Spider 2000 Veloce
Classic Italian style with modern performance.
I bought the late series 2 car as my first Alfa. The body work was very good but the mechanics were a little worn. What I did find was a long list of little jobs which needed dealing with but the car still drove OK. I spent a fair amount on bring the engine and suspension up to standard. The engineering of the car is very well designed and years ahead of UK sports cars of the same era. Spares availability is first class with nearly everything available off the shelf from one of the Alfa specialists in the UK.
Performance is very good with the 2000 twin cam and 5 speed gearbox, the all disk brakes are well up to the job too. The suspension seems to soak up bumps and gives a comfortable ride and there are plenty of options to fine tune it to a more sporty ride if required. Town driving is easy with as the engine pulls very strongly from low down, and motorway performance is good if a little noisy with a max of 120 MPH. I have a LHD version which I soon got the hang of and as it was designed as such is a little easier to work on than RHD versions.
The interior is roomy for two with a good size boot and the hood folds down in seconds. The heater is well up to winter driving and I use mine all year round. But I would say a garage is the best way to go storage wise as even the best fitting hood is not up to modern standards and will leak in heavy rain.
All in all a great classic choice which really does drive as good as it looks, and stands out from the crowd at any show.
