Are classic cars going to have safety checks?

I read online a brief report that classic cars are due to come under the scrutiny of an MoT like safety check.
Are any actual details known?

The Department for Transport conducted a public consultation earlier this year on how classic cars should be treated in respect of regulations such as the MoT. Just over 1,000 responses were received, and when questioned on whether there should be a new type of safety check which takes into account the age of an historic or classic vehicle, 36% said no, 18% said yes - same or similar to the current MoT tests, 10% yes - basic check for roadworthiness, 8% said yes - MoT style test which is appropriate to the age of the vehicle, and 5% said yes - an ad hoc inspection when the vehicle is used on the road or following a major restoration.

It is worth bearing in mind that this is a relatively small public consultation, and does not necessarily mean that legislation will be put in place. It is also important to note that the consultation was carried out under the previous government.
