Very good family car with a lot going for it

Back 10 or 15 years ago, the Skoda brand was nothing short of a maker of bad automotive jokes, with its terrifyingly dangerous driving Estelle to the crude, dated Rapid, Skoda needed to pick up success in order to keep up with its rivals. However with a little VW input, the brand had a breath of fresh air when the Octavia was launched in '98. Superb value for money was its key appeal with every model receiving air conditioning, a CD player and 3x3 point rear seatbelts. It's also quite a laugh to drive down a country lane. OK maybe its not as accomplished as a Focus (one of which I also own) but the Octavia wasn't bad. A satisfyingly raspy exhaust note, slick gearchange and well weighted steering (light in town, increases weight at speed) means the Octavia isn't just a marketing exercise from an under rated manufacturer. I would recommend one to a friend without reservation.
