Elegant, classy and timeless styling. Great road presence and sublime handling - the E39 WILL become a motoring icon in the future.

Ogled mine on the internet for some time before plucking up the courage to buy it. This courage mostly stemmed from the fact that I had recently received a substantial redundancy payout so I knew the money was there in case of major mechanical failure. Pleased to say that never happened, but you can't run these regal machines on pocket money either. I guess my 5 Series ownership experience has been very similar to that of others, no serious mechanical issues because of the quality of the engineering, but relatively expensive ancillary niggles that make sure the car is on the expensive side to run. But you forget all this when you drive onto the road fresh out of the carwash and see all the looks you attract (from pedestrians and motorists alike) as you drive down the street. Forgiveness follows memory loss when you put your foot down and listen to that straight six wind up from a purr to a still refined snarl. And all the "Nice car mate" observations from teenagers who are the same age as it just ice the cake. Avoid the diesels and the automatics because they can go sideways on you and try and get the Sport Pack spec because the body mods really do transform the car. There's only one colour to get, and that's blue. But I guess I am a little bias on that one.
