Overall reliability

Great drive and well equiped for the price. Excellent build quality.

Best drive of any car I have owned. Good on the motorway or around town. Steering and braking is excellent. Good power (50 to 80 is very quick) but not as economical as I thought. Averages about 43mpg.
Only problems so far is a broken rear spring and just had front drivers side caliper replaced. It was seized and caused some serious steering wheel vibration! Given the reputation of this car for blowing turbo's I pruchaced it with a 3 year warranty from a Ford dealer. This actualy covered the broken spring. Independent BMW specialists charge about £130 for removing the swirl flaps. Not a bad idea if you plan on keeping the car for any length of time. I recently had the inspection II done at a local independent for £180 about half what the local dealer wanted to charge, so servicing etc can be done at a realistic price.
This car can look and drive like new even at 7+ years old. There always seems lots to choose from on the second hand market, so picking a good one should be easy.
The car is excellent on long journeys. very well equipped for the price with everything you will need like climate control, CD changer, cruise control, multilfunction steering wheel and reverse parking aid. Very comfortable driving position.
One word of warning. Always use screen wash additive! Not long after getting the car the washer jets stopped working. Problem was mold in the tank which blocked a filter on the output of the pump. Tank can be removed by undoing the 10mm bolt at the top of the tank. Then clean the small wire gauze filter and flush the tank. A simple DIY job which my local BMW dealer quoted £110!!
One last thing, if there is even a hint of snow in the weather forecast leave the car at home! Rear wheel drive is great but not in snow. Believe me, it is very easy to get the car stuck, even in moderate snow fall. The estate simply has no weight over the back wheels.
