A beautiful trip while it lasts

I have owned this car for nearly eight years. I have covered only 32k miles(out of 85k). I use it for short commutes and the odd longer journey. I just can't get rid of it, it is supremely comfortable, luxurious and outrageously fast. It has gone through a set of lower suspension arms, brakes, tyres, battery,(original lasted 11 years) and a head light bulb, that's it, I have never owned a car that I have spent less money on. Fuel economy is 24-26 around town and 30-32 on a run. I think I have been lucky with her.

The car has always burned a lot of oil - up to a litre every 600-1000 miles which apparently is normal for the M54 engine. These engines throw a lot of emulsified oil into top of the crank case if you do short journeys. The valve stem oil seals leak a small amount of oil causing smoke on start-up. Recently it has been smoking heavily and intermittently on acceleration, this is either a ring and not worth fixing or a problem with the CCV(boring but look up online) which is worth doing. This is now an old car but is still in my opinion the prettiest 3 series ever excepting the new 2012 model.

I paid just over 10k for the car, the massive performance, screaming engine note and safe handling make this a real pleasure to drive. In my case it has also been cheap to run(so far!), with my mileage mpg is irrelevant. I am certain that were this car a diesel it would have cost me a fortune by now. HJ bangs on about the shortcomings of diesels and I'm certain he's right this car has 300Nm of torque and doesn't break if you only drive 4000 miles a year. This type of car can be a money pit, mechanically they are relatively cheap to fix but like all modern era cars it will be the electronics that writes them off, sadly not destined to be a classic but the trip is great while it lasts!
