Overall reliability

totaly reilable starts every time only replaced servicable items on a 1996 car with 139k current on the clock

For a 1996 with currently 139k and change on the clock car it feels new no rattles knocks squeeks etc it starts on the button stops on a dime.
there are two vairents on this engine a 1.8 1798 cc and a 1898cc 1.9 the 1.9 has slightly more torque mine is the 1.9
the view from the drivers seat is good all round and has a reasonable turning circle.
mine is a 318is coupe its is the basic model so no air con asc sun roof climate control or on board computer. which can cause some issues,
it does have electric front windows which on some models the windows can dance up and down this can be cured with a spray of silicone grease down the window runners.
rust mine has none and for a 96 car thats some going, these cars can rust on the back arches due to owners not cleaning them out bottom of the doors are prone to rust front arches can rust too.
check the rubber jacking point bungs are in situ as if they are missing the sills will rust.
on the coupes ask when the rear brake pipes were replaced as, on a car of this age this will either be ready to go or should have been done recently it is a big job as well roughly 6 hrs on a ramp.
snow and wet i have had no problems forget what people say about bmws in the snow if you can drive properly you will have no issues.
tax £205 12 months
insurance £330 fully comp 3yrs no claims 39 yrs old
servicing if you diy reckon on £100 for a full service.
parts radiator £80
so they are not bank breakers
the 318i m42/m44 are chain driven so no cam belt to worry about these chains are good for 150k but have been known to last a lot longer and the chain is not very expensive to replace although specialist tools are required to change it/
i would reccomend using 10/40w semi synth oil in this car.
as it is a coupe its not great for buying large/bulky items home although the back seats do fold down.
when you buy a car of this age you have to remember if it does brake down it is a 15yr old car but ive seen new cars on the back of an aa truck, regular servicing change the oil at 6k and dont bounce it off the limiter and the engines good for 200k bought mine for £995 with 124k no service history book but a file full of invoices even the original sales invoice.
