Austin Rover is expected to tell union leaders that it is closing toolmaking operations at three factories. with the loss of 800 jobs. The toolrooms are believed to be Castic Bromwich, Birmingham. with 600 employees, Dunstable in Bedfordshire and Llaneili, Dyfed, each with 100 workers.

In the past five years Austin Rover has undertaken the most concentrated new model programme attempted by a British car maker, beginning with the Metro. and followed by the Maestro, Montego and small Rover. A fourth factory at Radford, Coventry is also earmarked for closure but all 260 workers here will be offered other employment.
