West Yorkshire Foundries closes

West Yorkshire Foundries in Leeds, a wholly-owned subsidiary of British Leyland, is to make 580 workers redundant, more than half its workforce. A spokesman for the company said last night that while the redundancies were the result of the general business recession they related particularly to cutbacks in the motor industry.
In addition to supplying British Levland with cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, gear cases and brake drums,,.the factory also supplies about half a dozen other companies which manufacture vehicles and agricultural machinery.
