Tea-break strike ends

3 July 1980

The tea-break strike at BL's Longbridge plant in Birmingham ended yesterday (the Press Association reports).

BL announced that unions had accepted a clause in Sir Michael Edwardes's recovery plan relating to "relaxation allowances ". In return, the company is to make a fresh study of the allowances to see if there are any grounds for altering them, BL said.

The 10-day dispute is estimated to have cost BL at least £10m in lost production of Minis and Allegros. It started when 100 paint sprayers went on strike after being told their twice-daily tea breaks would be staggered and shortened.
