Strikes

8 January 1972

At British Leyland's truck and tractor plant at Bathgate, West Lothian, the 3,500 shop floor employees carried out their threat to strike unless the company met demands for an £8 a week increase.

All production was at a standstill last night. Some 650 men walked out at Triumph, Liverpool, after the dismissal of two men; The dispute has stopped production of bodies for the TR6, Toledo and 1500 models and threatens production at the company's Coventry plant which is dependent on Liverpool for much of its supplies. The strikers are not due to meet again before Tuesday.

Jaguar car production has been paralysed for the past week by a strike involving engine workers. A further 2,500 are laid off. They are not due to meet again before next Thursday when the company will have lost more than £4m worth of car production.
