Two of the three British Leyland Mini assembly lines and the 1800 assembly line at Austin-Morris, Longbridge, Birmingham, shut down last night and 3,200 workers were laid off until further notice. A strike by 130 women sewing machinists has halted production of upholstery and interior trim.
Meanwhile workers at four Rover plants in the Birmingham area voted at- a mass meeting yesterday for an immediate overtime ban followed by a series of one day strikes beginning on Monday over management proposals to end piecework. The main plant at Solihull is not involved.
