Walk Out By 6000 In New Car Strike

25 May 1963

DAILY MIRROR

A new strike hit the troubled car industry yesterday .  And as a result more than 6,000 men were idle by last night. The strike began before lunch at the Standard- Triumph International factory at Coventry.

Several hundred maintenance men and drivers stopped work in a dispute over pay. The management were asked to allow a meeting to the factory of the whole labour force. They refused. At that, nearly 6,000 workers walked out and held their meeting on a nearby common. Later they went home. Car and lorry production was stopped and night shift work involving another 800 men had to be cancelled .

The strikers are due to meet again on Monday morning.
