Small cars delay

7 March 1963

A serious hold up in production of BMC's range of small cars is expected as a result of the continued strike of 500 workers at the Dunlop No. 3 factory at Coventry. The strike began last Friday over dismissal of two shop stewards. The strikers held a mass meeting yesterday and reiterated their reinstatement demand.

It was stated yesterday that as a result of the strike 1200 men at Morris Motors, Oxford, will be idle until next Tuesday. They are employed on production of Morris and MG 1100s.

A BMC spokesman said: 'We can't possibly continue without fresh supplies of suspension units. And once the assembly lines stop the effect will snowball in no time throughout other BMC factories. It is a grave situation.'

He added: 'The first models to be hit are our best home and export sellers.'
