Fear Of Effect On B.M.C. Exports

21 June 1961

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, JUNE 20

The British Motor Corporation said here today that 6,000 car workers in Birmingham and Oxford would be idle by tomorrow because of the unofficial strike at Smiths.

"The strike is hitting us at a time when we want peak output to meet strong demand and can only have the effect of disorganizing our exports and putting up our costs when we are facing strong competition from foreign manufacturers,"
the company said.

At the Austin factory, Birmingham. 1,200 workers were idle for the second day. Half of them who reported tonight in the hope that work would be available were sent home again. At Cowley, Morris Minor production will be stopped tomorrow, making about 3,000 workers idle altogether.
