Does extended warranty cover wear and tear?

I have had a used Nissan Qashqai. I bought it eight months ago and paid extra for a three year extended warranty. Recently, the vehicle developed a fault, but the dealer claims that the extended warranty doesn't cover the repair as it is "wear and tear". Is this right?

Depends what the fault is. If it occurred within six months of buying the car then, whether it's wear and tear or not, the dealer who sold you the car is liable. But, since it occurred more than six months after purchase, then whether it's covered or not depends on the specific wording of the warranty and wear and tear items such as brakes, tyres, clutch, belts, etc. would not normally be covered.
