How can I get my deposit back from a dealer?

I was interested in buying a nearly new Vauxhall Insignia. The model I wanted was available from an authorised dealer and the salesman offered to bring it down. After agreeing a price on my existing car he said he would order the car from Vauxhall. Then he explained that he must ask for a £500 payment. I understood this to be confirmation of serious intent on my part and gave my credit card details.

He explained that on receipt he would have any necessary servicing and valeting done then invite me back to see and test the car to "ensure you are happy". This phrase was used again when he rang to advise that the car was available for inspection and testing. In the end I decided not to purchase - I felt the quality and comfort did not justify the price asked. They are now refusing to return my money which, at no stage was advised to be a non- refundable deposit. Where do I stand?

Tell the dealer principal of the dealership concerned that you will be taking the matter to court. So they can refund your money or fight it out in court with the attendant bad publicity this will bring them.
