Engine not getting up to normal temperature
My 2007 Audi A5 3.0 TDI Quattro has started running cool. I have owned the car from new and up to last autumn (2013), the temperature gauge used to get up to 90c and stay there, now it registers between about 75c to 80c, even on long runs.
My local Audi garage has looked at the car and could not find nothing wrong with any of the sensors and have suggested that I get the thermostat replaced at a cost in excess of £400, but they could not guarantee that this would solve the problem. What do you think?

A diagnostic test can tell if the temp sensor is working or not, but obviously cannot tell if it is giving the correct temperature readings. How could know that without an entirely separate coolant temp check?
If the temp sensor thinks the engine is running hotter than it is, it will then switch on the radiator fans. So that's what I'd replace first.
