Why does my 1990 Lancia Delta's turbo 'whoosh' when it comes on boost?

I have just bought a very low mileage and immaculate 1990 Lancia Delta HF Turbo. Do you have any advice about looking after the turbo? It makes a ‘whoosh’ sound when coming on. Is this normal?

The turbo should be water-cooled, but you should always idle the engine for a minute or two before switching off so that oil continues to circulate through the turbo bearing. This both cools and lubricates it as it spools down from very high exhaust gas induced rpm. Yes, the ‘whoosh’ is normal from a 23-year-old turbocharger.
