Which wheels and tyres can we fit to our Audi A3 for better ride quality?

My husband drives a 2006 Audi A3 Sportback with 225/40 ZR 18 low profile tyres, which we both dislike as they provide for an uncomfortable ride and cannot cope with the awful potholes in our area. Can you suggest a better tyre/wheel combination that improves matters but does not degrade too much the current good road handling abilities ?

16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16 tyres, preferably Toyo J48s or Michelin Primacy 3. You can get a set of four 16-inch TUV-approved Alutec wheels from www.tyremen.co.uk for £335 inc plus tyres. You could have them delivered with the tyres pre-fitted. You have to disclose the change to your insurer as a 'modification'.
