Can I fit longer-lasting tyres to my Skoda Superb?

I own a 2009 Skoda Superb 170 TDI DSG which has 225/40 R18 low profile tyres fitted, and these tyres wear much more quickly than the tyres on my four previous Skodas. It is also very easy to damage the tyres, especially the nearside fronts. I would like to keep the car for another 2-3 years and was wondering whether it would be possible to change the wheels for a less extreme profile.

The best size wheel for this class of car is 16-inch with 205/55 R16 or 205/60 R16 tyres, depending on exactly which rolling circumference matches. Manufacturers fit wide, low profile tyres because tyre makers sell them cheaply as loss-leaders, aiming to recoup their profit on replacement sales.
