Why won't our 2010 Renault Clio dCi achieve its quoted fuel economy figures?

I'd be really interested to hear whether anyone can get close to the claimed economy for the new 98g/km Renault Clio dCi. We are running a 2010 Clio dCi 86bhp, which is supposed to deliver a combined figure of 62.8mpg, but after 2000 miles we get barely 53mpg on our regular commute. Our 2005-reg Clio dCi 80 had an official combined 67mpg, and our regular commute got us 65mpg average. We are struggling to figure out the big disparity in the figures, and our dealer says there is nothing untoward with the car (shockingly bad panel gaps aside - I am appalled at the "quality", which they also say is acceptable).

From experience, you should give it 4000 miles or so before starting to worry about matching the official fuel consumption figures. The engine needs some time to loosen up before it gets into its stride.

Also, have a read of this, to accurately measure your consumption.
