Tickover is too quick on our Golf Plus?

Our Golf Plus, 2008, 35k, has been Volkswagen serviced from new by Volkswagen but it has a problem. The tickover starts about 850 (fine) but soon moves up to about 1,100. This makes the car a bit too fast in say 2nd gear when going slowly. The dealer has plugged it into the system more than once but says it shows no fault but having served an apprenticehsip in the trade years ago, I know it's not right.

Well yes we would have expected that a diagnostic check would have shown up a fault code.
Other than that we would carry out checks on the following
1.ECT (engine coolant temp sensor)
2.APP (accelerator pedal position sensor)
3.Check the injectors
4.ECU wiring /connections
5.ECU programmimg
6.ECU itself.

Modern day mechanics tend to just plug in a diagnostic and if the computer says nothing then that's it, nothing is wrong.

You may want to ask them what other checks they could do other than plugging in the diagnostic, and them ask them if they have checked any of the above.
