Battery maintenance on used cars?

I am going away for 3 months. My CR-Z will be indoors and my BMW outdoors. I am receiving conflicting advice - never use a trickle charger on the CR-Z. Should I disconnect the negative lead or use a trickle charger? Nobody has any information on the battery and its capacity etc.

I can just disconnect the negative lead on the BMW. If I want to use both cars on my return how do I make certain the charge is maintained on both cars, bearing in mind that one is to kept outdoors?

I would not leave a CR-Z hybrid on trickle. So put the BMW in the garage and leave that on trickle.
